It really depends, but if you are not real close I would use a .308 or up. A .22, or .17 is fine for a hog in a pin, but not for a loose hog. Less than a 100 yards I would say a .223 would do the job but shot placement will be CRITICAL, and expect to do some tracking. I personally don't like to track a hog, once you are in the brush with him if he is wounded you are in trouble.
