Re: Rear axle seals leaks. Please report.
While rotating tires, noticed D/S rear axle seal leaking (49k miles). Prior to checking this board, I took it to dealer. Talked with mech who had done this one time before on a Titan. Total parts (bearing, spacer, seal) was around $100. I discussed with the mech how to do it and found that it shouldn't take someone too long if they have a decent variety of tools. The only likely problem would be a vertical press to set the new bearings and spacer on the axle. Apparently the service manual is aware of having to destroy the spacer and bearings/races to get the new seal in place...it lists those parts (bearings & spacer) as necessary to complete the job. The mech said one will have to use a die grinder to chop the spacer off and the same to remove the bearings. Fortunately, mine was under warranty and it will be fixed tomorrow. However, it shouldn't be that bad of a job in the future if I need to do it again (which appears likely). That being said, I'm not sure how fluid leaking on the back side of the dust cover will make the brakes become inoperable as some have noted. The fluid did not appear to be on the rotor side of the dust cover. I didn't remove the rotor prior to visiting the dealership in a search for parts. Does anyone have the service manual and would be willing to post the parts breakout for the axle assy. I got a copy at the dealership but left it since it was under warranty. I will post on the NHTSA website.
