It won't really delay the heating up... The main reason the A/C comes on with the defroster is to get rid of humidity. When your window fogs up and you can't see while driving in heavy rain, just flip the defroster on and since the A/C turns on, too, it'll evaporate the fog off the window MUCH more quickly...
