LOL well THIS is a question!
I feel for you being an E-4. I just retired from the Navy as a Chief.
Unfortunately, as a military guy growing up and 2 divorces while in it seemed I never had money. A lucky break with acquisition and sale of our condo a year later and being married to a woman that works 'with' me instead of against me has made a huge change.
Now, we live much better and 'have a plan' and do things the smarter way now with money management.
Yes we save for retirement (TSP and her 401k), we have a house and payment comensurate to our income and have one 'Nice' car payment and our other two cars were bought for cash.
Other credit accounts are less than 3 in total period with one being for additions to our home.
Best thing you can do is live 'within' your means. Once you get into a hole, its very hard and painful working your way out.
