I was looking for more of a piece of art/history but shooting is so much of a blast that i may start with something like this .22cal

Drop me an IM if you want to know how to build one... I'd order the upper from a place that built mine (I had them cut the barrel to that length so it looked cool). They make them with a dedicated .22LR barrel instead of having a chamber adapter. Also, with a .22LR, you don't need a buffer tube... which makes for a smaller setup. You can build the lower yourself-- just get a stripped pistol lower shipped to your FFL.

I shoot the hell out of this, and rarely clean it, just to see how long I can go before it jams... .22LR sometimes causes hiccups, but its easily remedied and $9.88/550rds makes up for it

Also, if you go the pistol route, you can always convert it to a legal rifle (barrel 16+ inches, buttstock, certain OAL, etc.) and legal pistol. Just don't make it into an AOW or SBR by accident though...

You can also make a 9mm or a .223/5.56mm pistol-- several calibers to choose from actually. They are fun to shoot, but with ammo prices going up, I rarely shoot mine. If you keep the buffer tube, its just a matter of swapping uppers to make a new pistol (or rifle) (except 9mm needs a slight modification to the bolt, or switch out the hammer each time, and add a drop in magazine block (several styles to choose from)).

I can tell you this, besides for investment purposes, I think full auto is overrated. I have way more fun shooting my pistols than full auto. Besides, you can learn to shoot semi auto almost as fast, sometimes faster (depends on what you compare with), than full auto, and it can be more accurate and conserves ammo.
