black is the new chrome. i believe it's a fad, a popular one at that. while i don't think you'll see chrome go by the wayside i just think that's what is popular right now, and anyone updating their vehicle wants that hottest latest and greatest. the exception of course being the off roaders who don't really need the chrome as it doesn't make the truck faster.
you'll notice that most top custom car builders don't follow trends but try to build timeless vehicles when given the oppurtunity. my favorites are the period specific hot rods, true to the times..
oh, and as Meg stated, sometimes it's just a matter of maintainance!
Me, i don't mind the factory wheels, easy to clean! I'll upgrade sooner or later and needless to say i don't know if i'll go chrome, black chrome, or painted, or PC the stockers.
