Don't ever pull in reverse unless it is an emergency (life and limb type of thing). The problem is you're putting all the stress on your reverse gears in your transmission, and they're not designed for that kind of load.

The proper way is to use a tow shackle assembly in your hitch and tug, not yank them while you drive forward.

I've done this quite a few times and it usually works. Nowadays, I don't strap people out, I just use the winch.

Strapping is violent and jerky with tons of forces being applied all in an instant. Winching is slow, more easily controlled, methodical, and in my experience usually works much better.
