I might be wrong, but I get the impression the OP has a 2wd, is considering a lift of some type, but wanted opinions on if it is an outlandish idea ... and I agree with you that SDTitan1 summed it up great!

Btw, if I had seen this thread back in '04, and was driving a 2wd, I'd get one of these 4" spindle packages, and set the coilovers for 0 preload, but you can get 7.5" out of any of them, (on the bottom row), and one of them says 8.5"!
