The factory pre-load is 0.75" (thread showing between adjuster nut and top cap). In designing the shock, the can and shaft lengths are determined to maximize available travel. Then we set the pre-load to level the truck, and tune the shock to that pre-load. You can increase the lift by adding pre-load, but it will make for a harsher ride, and will eat into your droop (down-travel). Our engineer suggests maintaining at least 2" of droop or you'll be constantly topping out the shock.

It's a matter of personal preference. I have my Titan set with about two additional turns to try and keep it level since the rear mods I did left it an inch or two over stock.
