It's not so much the threads on the cap as it is the way it seals. I think he's dealing with something other than the cap. Maybe the canister itself is leaking. Vent Control Valves don't usually set a Large EVAP Leak code but a Small EVAP LEAK code or a specific Vent Control Valve code.

This is the code that came up on me p0455. It could be a number of things,yes but the track record for these valves with no filter just trumps a gas cap.
