take the upper and lower both off. and install the lower 1st. and as you said, you'll have to cut the zip ties if you want to uninstall them later. easier to twist the bottom of the upper grill inserts with a needle nose imo so that's how I did it. I installed/uninstalled my billet grill inserts a few times.. thinking about getting them powder coated but still up in the air on it...
