Your friend is right, but you will get a performance increase with the air intake system. The problem is the engine is able to breath much better with the increase in cold air coming in, but sense you have the stock exhaust on there it's diameter isnt able to handle the increase in air coming out so alittle bit of backpressure is created and cutting the possible performance increase.
To clearify this cuts possbile total performance increase this will not hinder the normal performance at all. Get hooked up with a quality exhaust so that nice engine can get rid of the increase in air just as fast and you will not only take full advantage of your uprades but sound damn nice.
