I thought it was odd too. These things happen I guess. When I lived in Oregon I was lucky to get 3 years out of a battery due to the cold winter temperatures. Here in AZ I guess your lucky to get three years with the heat. Good news is my new battery has a 7 year prorated warranty and will be replaced for FREE if it fails within the first 2 years.
The cap was replaced under warranty so at least I wasn't out any money for that one.
