I will have to pile on and say that practice is definitely the key. I live in Colorado and have a 4x4 but I spend 99% of the time in 2WD. Mainly the only time I put it in 4WD is when my mom needs to drive my truck in the snow.

I know everyone here in Colorado, even the ones with 4WD, put sandbags over their rear axle. Its a fairly cheap fix.
