Goto,
I tow a 6800# Arctic Fox 26J, and went to Colorado a couple months ago, a journey of about 2,700 miles. Here's what I found, after fiddling around a lot (and telling my wife to ignore my muttering):
Tow in Manual, 4th. You can use cruise and all, the tranny won't hunt, but you will have to 'tiptronic' it down a gear for the long hills when you lose more than about 12 MPH. When you hit the top, just toggle it up. You can't go into Drive while in Manual except by pushing the button on the shifter (at least on my column shift). So if the sun's in your eyes, you don't have to worry, just toggle it up a couple of times.
If you slam the gas, the trans will shift down, engine will scream, and away you go. When you let up, it won't go up past the gear you have selected in Manual.
Nugget:
I found NO difference between Tow mode and Standard mode in Manual. Notice I say in MANUAL. The shift points were the same. The trans did hunt a LOT when in D, Tow mode or Standard. 'Way too much.
Nissan needs to work on this firmware a LOT. Tow mode shouldn't really let you hit 5th unless it's going to stay there. Otherwise, I have found it to be useless.
...Nissan, are you listening??
