If you don't want a shotgun, you might consider a .38 Special revolver in double action. It will not jamb on you...you don't need to pull a slide back, it packs a pretty good wallop, and they can be found fairly cheaply because everyone wants an auto. Just pick it up and pull the trigger. Plus, the ammo is cheaper.
I think that everyone wants an auto because they have seen a lot of them in the movies. Having said this, I have a Baby Eagle 40 S&W auto, but I am thinking of selling it, and buying a .38

PS I just noticed that Kronos recommended the .38 as well...
