The universal tuners connect either via FM modulation thru the radio or via an AUX input. In the XM market there is a basic tuner that will work with three different manufaturers HU, but one must purchase an adapter box that is specific to the HU being used.

basiclly Nissan decided to invent it's own special connection, hence only I tuner will work, the one that cost $275 for just the tuner.
