A/C Operation

So I finally figured out that I have been running the A/C compressor for the entire first 2 months of ownership. I could always hear what I suspected might be the A/C compressor turning on and off while idling but could never really figure out why. Sounds stupid I know and yes I have owned several vehicles with "automatic" climate control settings but the new Titan's is especially confusing.

Page 4-43 in the Owners Manual "Automatic Operations"

" The temperature of the passenger compartment
will be maintained automatically. Air
flow distribution, fan speed and A/C on/off
are also controlled automatically. The A/C
button indicator will remain in the last user
setting. Under this condition, the indicator
light on the A/C button indicator will not turn
on if the user had not selected the A/C
button off. Turning off the air conditioning via
the A/C button is not allowed in this mode. If
the A/C button indicator was on when entering
this mode, and the A/C button is selected
in this mode, the A/C button indicator
will turn off, but the A/C compressor will still
be automatically enabled. For additional information,
refer to “Air flow control” in this
section.
To turn off the compressor, turn off auto
mode, then turn the A/C on then off until the
A/C button indicator is not lit."

In short, if you (or someone before you) has the A/C on then enters Automatic Mode, then turns the A/C off while in Automatic mode (the A/C light goes out) then turns off auto mode, the A/C compressor will continue to run without the A/C light on while not in auto mode...AND it will continue to operate in that manner (compressor on without the A/C light on). Neither turning off the climate controls nor turning off the vehicle will reset this manner of operation. You must turn on and back off the A/C while not in Auto mode to return back to normal operation.

Not sure if it was like this in the 1st Gen Titan, it definitely didn't function like that in my 2015 Frontier. Anyways maybe everyone already knew this but hopefully this post will help someone.

Re: A/C Operation

Interesting. I am going to have to check. I noticed this to but just thought maybe it was just the air vents making the noise because the light was off. Thanks for the heads up

Re: A/C Operation

NEVER EVER EVER EVER push "AUTO"....... (took me forever to figure this out--why compressor kept running).

Push "ON", then increase the speed of the fan, then push A/C.

This is the most confusing climate control system in any vehicle I've ever owned.

+1

The A/C in my 2003 Chevy Trailblazer is much better than my 2015 Titan.

The Chevy has separate driver and passenger temperature controls, the various vents can be completely closed off, and I can decide if I want outside air or not for any control setting.

The Nissan designers seem to believe that they know what owners need more than the owners themselves.

Re: A/C Operation

I have a 2017 Titan, only a week old. My question is that it seems like in the morning when I leave for work, the A/C is on 67, but this morning I felt warm air coming out. The A/C button is selectred on, and on recycle, but in the afternoon, it seems to be fine, any ideas?

Re: A/C Operation

Appears its stuck on AUTO.

If AUTO is off, you can turn the Fan ON, and select A/C....

If you want heat, just turn on the FAN, and turn the TEMP knob up.. (just don't push in the AUTO button)...
