So there has been some talk on here about the 2017 Titan's 2.937 rear gear ratio and whether or not it is good/bad or sufficient for towing with the new 7 speed transmission. I thought it would be fun to compare it to the '15 Titan with 3.357 rear gear and its 5 speed and the Tundra's 4.30 gearing paired with its 6 speed transmission. Below are the final gear ratios :)1).

Gear Toyota / '17 Titan / '15 Titan (with 3.357)
1st 14.319 / 14.350 / 12.847
2nd 8.428 / 9.307 / 7.949
3rd 5.805 / 5.953 / 5.103
4th 4.300 / 4.144 / 3.357
5th 3.139 / 2.937 / 2.800
6th 2.537 / 2.538 / N/A
7th N/A / 2.273 / N/A

Reverse 13.158 / 11.868 / 8.771
Final Crawl Ratio 37.802 / 38.989 / 33.35

And here are the final drive ratios for a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with their 3.73 "Max Tow" Package

6L80 (6 speed)
1st - 15.032
2nd - 8.0803
3rd - 5.707
4th - 4.290
5th - 3.176 (OD)
6th - 2.499 (OD)

Reverse 11.414

8L90 (8 speed)
1st - 17.009
2nd - 11.078
3rd - 7.758
4th - 6.304
5th - 4.737
6th - 3.73
7th - 3.171 (OD)
8th - 2.425 (OD)

Reverse 14.249

Overall the new 7 speed in the Titan matched with the 2.937 rear gear seems to be a very competitive performance/towing option making minimal sacrifices for MPG. The new 8 and 10 speed transmissions in the Chevrolets and Fords seem pretty impressive though.

And here are the final gear ratios for the Ford 6 speed. I included the finally ratio for all rear gear options here.

Gear 3.15/3.31/3.55/3.73
1st - 13.1355/13.8027/14.8035/15.5541
2nd - 7.371/7.7454/8.307/8.7282
3rd - 4.788/5.0312/5.396/5.6696
4th - 3.591/3.7734/4.047/4.2522
5th - 2.709/2.8466/3.053/3.2078
6th - 2.1735/2.2839/2.4495/2.5737
Reverse - 10.71/11.254/12.07/12.682

It appears that the 2.937 gear matched with the new 7 speed translates to about a 3.55 in typical "domestic rear gear speak". Yes I know Chevrolet doesn't offer a 3.55 but the Titan's ratios fall between the Chevy's 3.42 and 3.73. So again the new Titan half ton should be very competitive from a towing/performance/offroad standpoint especially considering its best MPG figures are coming from one gear offering. Whereas Ford/Chevy are quoting their best MPG figures from their 3.15 and 3.08 respectively.
