6 1/2 inch speakers and are almost 2 1/2 inches deep.
The stock 6x9s in front are mounted on a plastic baffle that looked like a rattle trap to me. I had originally bought a 6x9 to 6.5 adapter from crutchfeld that fit the stock 6x9 plastic baffle, but didn't fit my new speakers. I mounted my new 6.5s by making mounting plates out of mdf. After installing sound deadening mat, I bolted the mdf plates to the door, using bolts with nuts on the inside of the door (rather than the stock screws). This makes a much more solid mounting than the OEM plastic. And yes, there is plenty of room for 2.5" mounting depth. I also used some foam baffles (speaker cups) from crutchfield to keep the water inside the door off the speakers. With the window down and the door panel off and the stocker speaker & plastic baffle removed, you can measure the distance (depth) to the window glass, and thus determine the thickness of mdf required.
