For the numeric MPG calc, you are exactly right - it's a rolling average. The instantaneous MPG thing I'm talking about is a little graph on the right side of the screen that's labeled from 0 to 30. It's always reading out what your current mpg is "this instant". If you're cruising at 45 mph with a light foot on the gas, it will hover around 20 mpg, under full throttle acceleration, the bottom falls out and it stays around 5 mpg until you get off the loud pedal. When you roll to a stop, it falls all the way to zero.
