Hard to be a fan of a team with NO discernable direction (read: Colorado rockies).
1) "We are going after pitching. Nevermind, you can't pitch effectivly in Colorado." (see: Hampton, Neagle, Kile, etc.) Untrue in my humble opinion. One has to re-learn how to pitch in order to be effective here. Overpowering fastballs and a good change or slider works best at altitude. It IS more difficult to throw a hard breaking curve, but if you learn how to throw it at elevation, it can work. Just not all of the time. There will be more mistakes made than at sea level, but learning when to throw it and how to throw it can work.
2) We are going after hitting." Well, it worked back in the days of the Blake Street Bombers. Produced the only playoff experience in short history, albeit a wild-card and then 3 and out. But what have they done since the dismantling of the formidable lineup? Gone out and tried to get guys looking to revive their careers as bombers, but really only slap hitters gaining some pop and then thinking that they are something they are/were not. And with never having a solid, consistent lineup that is allowed to gel over the course of a couple of seasons, there is no chemistry gained. It DOES play a large part in the construction of a team. Offensivly and defensivly.
3) "Defense! We are going after defense." Lot of good defense does you when opposing teams are coming in and launching off your mediocre, at best, pitching! Got to have balls on the ground to be able to play solid defense. Not everyone has the ability to jump like Torri Hunter!
Basically, find a damn philospohy and stick to it for longer than a season. Build the farm and quit trying to look for the quick fix.
Screw it, GO CARDS and GO A's!!!
