Sometimes you have to use multiple ports to get correct tuning. If done correctly you have to use the correct size and LENGTH for the tuning frequency you are trying to achieve. It may have been the case of 1 single port needed x length that could not be achievable with a single port. If for instance a 4" port needed a 24" length to tune at 30Hz, he would have to put an elbow onto the tubing inside the box which may not be practical. However if he used 2 - 3" ports they may only need to be 10" long to achieve the same tuning and would not require the more complex elbow inside the box. It all just depends on what works best for the speakers, the box design, and the frequency you are tuning to.
The only negative with using 3" ports is that beer cans don't fit quite as well into them when you get pulled over
