My camping gear and gear for 3 people would be ~200#. Can't see where 500# comes from unless you load your bed with firewood.
Also, I would load the trailer instead of the truck, to use the trailer's GVWR. That's frees up the trucks GVWR for people and on-board items.

lol, it add's up faster than you think.
I usually have firewood, generator and gas, assortment of tools for whatever, 6 gallon jug of extra water, an ez-up tent, and coolers full of ice and beer... oh and some food too. lol
And that doesn't include all the other crap that is in the trailer like chairs, cooking gear, clothing, nonparishable goods, and whatever other goodies we happen to have. I also don't really pack light, I like to be sure I have everything.
