Yeah, I understand your point, but I wouldn't have replaced speakers and amps and stuff. Hell, I'm happy with the stock non-Rockford Fosgate junk! What I'm having to deal with now is having a crappy sounding DVD player because of the RF modulator (which cost me about $900 installed - but it looks factory) or spend another $1500+ to get a double DIN head unit with navigation, and then I will have a factory bezel with extra holes in it. I'm obsessive compulsive (not really, but I should be) so that would drive me nuts.
I guess if your an audiophile and demand superb sound, the base radio will save money. If the factory sound will suffice, you may as well spring for it at the time of purchase.
