As further explaination: The sleeve has a variety of 'cutouts', the resulting tabs can be bent against the Metra frame to prevent the sleeve from sliding in and out. Several of the Metra kits I have used have a square ring which will clip into the opening in the kit where the radio fits. Without the 'ring' the sleeve fits rearward of the face of the kit. with the ring in place the front of the ring fits flush with the face of the kit.
On the side of the sleeve there are openings which are intended to be engaged by spring loaded clips on the HU. These clips would normally be removed or at least covered up when using the DIN type mounting you have configured. Using the sleeve method once the radio is inserted into the sleeve and pushed in such that the clips engage, it cannot be removed without disassembling the radio and kit from the dash or using 'release pins' (provided with the radio) that slide between the sides of the radio and the sleeve to force the clips back into the radio and out of the slots in the side of the sleeve.
