Yup, sounds like you had somebody who was careless bleeding the brakes. You are supposed to put a tube over the nipple on the bleed screw and put the end of the tube in a container so you don't spray brake fluid all over the place. You might also check under the hood, because if you push the caliper pistons back without bleeding fluid first, you can overflow the master cylinder and remove paint under the hood.
