they cover the width of the doors. they're pretty strong. i've used my hi=lift jack on them so i could plug a nail puncture on the trail. the'yre about 12" from each tire. i like the shrockworks ones also but i know that xterra ones are almost $400. btw i've banged them a bit in a rock quarry. only scratched the paint but that's ok cuz i plan to spray liner them. i'll try and see if i can get my camera working to take some closer pics but it's been shutting off on it's own. might have to take in to get serviced.
