NO downside to performance. Lots of guys go for the big duals (because, hey who doesn't want a bigger pipe)

but the end result is top end (high rev power) and nothing else. Great for dragging but too much freeflow actually hurts your bottom end. Plus with all the stuff in the way on the Titan, you end up with only a 'single and a half' because of the route the left pipe has to take. With modern stainless steel systems, this doesn't really hurt much, but it used to mean rustouts in short time with older pipes and materials.
The fuel mileage has been affected maybe .5 MPG better, but that is 'in the noise' so I don't claim it.
The big advantage for me is that the engine works less hard when towing, and it has a lot more grunt to get the whole rig rolling. I don't do the long solo freeway trips anymore but I would think that this has to help the mileage when out and droning like that.
