This is exactly what we did. Factory Y pipes are notorious for being restrictive.

We cut the pipes just after the cats, keeping the stock connectors, then went back just enough on the left side to get a good S turn and straight into the muffler. The FM went into the original muffler's spot, and we used the original hanger hardware and positions.

This bought us a nice changeout using all the stock stuff which has nothing wrong with it. We had a little bit of chirping from the way the rod on the stock hanger rubbed a bit but a few whacks with a hammer to gently bend it fixed that.
