Certainly, strobes will absolutely get the job done and as with yours, I've seen some GREAT setup's using strobes.
I just prefer LED's now since the price has come down and most of the flash patterns are easily selectable without a seperate power supply/controller. I think the visibility of them is higher than strobes too (at least during dawn/dusk hours).
I certainly wouldn't spend the money for a halogen light bar, not worth it compared to anything else on the market, and like you said, takes a huge electrical load.
Can't go wrong with LED or strobe...
