why are we changing our diff fluids as much as our oil? did I miss something?

Used to be that they'd make it 60k miles or more... in fact, on my 8.8" ford car rearends, the manual said "ford differentials are sealed for life. It is not necessary to change the fluid" I changed it anyway on my old cougar, it started leaking from the pinion seal from that point forward. I was then forced to top it off once a month and park in the street.
