Re: Need HVAC advice/help
I have been doing HVAC on comercial equip. and residential (on the side)for 10 years. To fix a leak in the evap coil is a pain in the rear. You would prob. have to remove the coil from the unit and find the leak, which could be in the tube sheet = more pain in the butt. Some repairs can be made, but depending on the age of the coil it might be in your best interest to replace it. To repair/ replace the coil you have to reclaim the refrigerant, braze in the leak or new coil and a new liquid line drier, pull a vacuum on the system, and recharge with refrig. Depending on their hourly rate and the cost of a new coil, which prices have gone up quite a bit on equipment, this quote might not be too bad. Get a few estimates though, if they wont charge for it. Most residential places around here, (NOT ALL) are just sales guys trying to sell you new equipment, but without seeing it for myself I cant be sure. If you have the skills to fix the leak, go right ahead, but you still have to deal with the refrigerant in the system and the vacuum, etc. It is illegal to vent the refrig. into the air!FYI Just throwing some numbers around, I prob. wouldnt be far off from that price. I charge $50.00/hr on the side, and it would take a few hours at least. Good luck!
