"Self reliant" "fend for themselves"? this isn't the 18th century. There isn't a need for that anymore. We no longer worry about basic survival needs on a day to day basis.
As for catch and release being cruel, that's just silly. The fish lives and goes back to the water to do fish things. What's cruel about that? Some would say the hooks. In fact, most fish have cartilidge for mouths (similar to our ears) so it isn't as painful as say foul hooking the fish.
