A lot of people would argue with you about that statement. "There isn't a need for that anymore" "We no longer worry about basic survival needs." ie fending for ourselves, being self reliant. Say that to anyone who has been robbed, mugged, carjacked, raped, etc. Or even someone who has been lost in the woods.
That is probably why this country is in the state that it is. Some people are to lazy, timid, or just plain stupid to take care of theirselves or their families. They depend on others, can you say governmental agencies, to take care of all their needs. I personally think it's a good thing to be self reliant and be able to fend for oneself. It may never happen, and I certainly hope it doesn't but who knows what's down the road? It's happened before. I'm for sure not going to sit around and wait for someone to feed me, take me out of harms way, etc. I think basic survival needs should be taught to everyone, the younger the better. I can guarantee you one thing, when someone comes crashing through my door in the middle of the night i'm not going to wait around for the cops to get here. That's one of the times when I will "fend for myself" and be "self reliant."
