capacitor

a farad is a term used measure a unit of capacitor power. 1 farad is alot. you would use a cap with your system for cars that have heavy bass that drains power. what it does is basicall hold power inreserve so when your amp draws a lot of power for a deep bass hit, it pulls power out of that instead of from your battery. that way your lights dont dim and your amp doesnt have to work as hard.

cap

ok your right. for the vast majority of people a 1 farad cap will do alot. my amp puts out a few thousand watts and i have no probs either.

what i meant was that a 1 fards cap would be more then you needed for most people.

I think that as I recall, 1 Farad is indeed a lot of power, however a "1 Farad" capacitor in car audio is measured in microfarads (uF).

Actually in car audio it is measured in actual farads, and when speaking electronics a farad is a large measurement. Back when I was taking electrical classes in high school our text books said that a 1 farad capacitor would be so large it would take up an entire room. Of course those books were outdated, as I had a .25 farad cap sitting in my truck at the time. That was about 8 years ago, now a days 1 farad is about the smallest you'll ever see. Now they've got 30, 40, 50+ farad caps. I ran that 1/4 farad on a system of about 600W rms and it didn't make a difference, the optima helped more. Now I'm running 1700+ W rms with no cap and no dimming.

This really doesn't apply to car audio caps at around 13.6 volts, but as a general rule capacitors encountered in high voltage devices such as CRT monitors & TV sets & tube audio & guitar amps can be extremely dangerous. For example, a 450 volt cap that is about the size of half a roll of lifesavers or even smaller can put a lethal current through your heart if you don't take proper precautions to discharge the capacitors when working on high voltage devices, even though the device is turned off and not plugged in. A one farad car audio cap will make a hell of a spark if you accidentally short the terminals. So if you are going to be working with capacitors you should do some reading on the subject first and observe proper safety precautions.
