Detailing Advice-PM Me

Hey guys ... I know sometimes we all want to look smart on the boards but in real life I made a ton of money from guys that "tried it first themselves"... It's no big deal.

I owned my own business and detailed 5 cars a day inside and out for 5 years.

I started with fleet rental cars..The best learning grounds cause I buffed them like I rented them. Mistakes didn't matter so I took the chances and learned without remorse what can happen with chemicals and machines.

Once I completed my "boot camp" I developed quite a high end clientelle in my area... Ferrari. Mercedes coupes, Landrovers, BMW's......Did em all

I've blown the fresh paint off hoods with pressure washers and learned how much pressure to apply before disaster

I've experimented with various buffing speeds and pads and learned how to avoid disaster

I've burnt mags and headers and glass by using the wrong chemicals.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I've already done what alot of you are about to do.

So.... If any one wants to PM me for quick advice instead of going on the public view...No problem, I'm happy to help. Either hit the public boards to help other members or PM me and I"ll try to help best I can.

Thanks Titan brothers

Nice to know man! I'll probably be hitting you up a few times soon. I'm trying to fix the "keyed" scratch on my Armada without going to a body shop. I just want to reduce it to the point of not really noticing it is there...

Take a good picture close up and send it too me...I'll give you a diagnosis.

I need to see the edges of the scratch clearly.

It's deep enough to get your finger nail in, but it doesn't look like it completely broke through the clear coat.

Take a look at this... http://www.langka.com/photos.php

It's a way to minimize the scratch... I've used my own version of this technique and it really helps.

Good luck..

Re: Detailing Advice-PM Me

I'd like to polish the plastic headlight lenses on my 01 Pathfinder.
Can I use my Porter Cable 7424 on this? If so on high or low speed?
What product would you recommend?

Hey Mike... Although I prefer a variable speed for this particular job, you can use the random orbit.

First thing to keep in mind is that most of the lenses these days are made of plastic....You know what that means....Be gentle and don't ride the machine in one spot.

Apply a light amount of a light glaze with an applicator and hit it once....wipe it down and check the progress. Should only take you 2 minutes per side and 5 clean up.

Trick...Apply the small amount of glaze more towards the center of the lense to keep the machine from pushing it into the gap between the paint and the lense...Makes for better end result.

Also, if the Random just isn't getting it done well enough for you, stop at a local detailer and ask if $10.00 would get a quick shot with a variable on the lense with a foam pad. Just talk like you know what your doing...would only take the guy 2 minutes tops.

Good luck and let me know how you made out....

Re: Detailing Advice-PM Me

Headlight glazing seems to be a popular topic. Maybe you could include your instructions in this thread. My wife's Honda has the same problem. We tried polishing compound and it helped some but there is still some glazing.

TT needs a detailing forum.

I think you bought the detail kit? If you did use the clay bar, Swirl&Haze, and Revive Polsih. If you didnt get it, there is someone you know very well that has all of those!
