gettin rid of a scratch

Hi titan lovers,
After getting a scratch on the clearcoat on a titan and applying spray paint. The can says let it dry for 48 hours. The paint looks kind of splotchy at the moment so i need a good polisher to finish it. Will the Turtle Wax polishing compound do the job?

Re: gettin rid of a scratch

how big is your scratch to use spray paint? A high speed buffer with a foam compound pad will do it but be careful not to burn the clearcoat

Re: gettin rid of a scratch

it's not my truck but it wasn't that large. it just made the paint a little splotchy. Do they need to use a buffer or can it just be buffed out by hand?

Not by hand it won't... Skyboi here... Couple of issues... I made a ton of money from guys that "tryed doin it myself with a little compound" leading to an entire double buff.

1. As far as you know the bubbles in the fresh paint could be down to the surface of the old paint...problem

2. trying to rub it out by hand....You'll have a blotchy mark in your clear coat where you scuffed it up...I know what your thinking...I'll do the whole panel...Nah, not gonna make it. that panel will look like a dogs breakfast when you done if you do it by hand. It will look great at first but when the wax dries you'll go insane.

3. using a machine will straighten it out but you'll hact to do the whole vehicle in order to have a clean look.

Now let's be realistic. you'll never eliminate the presence of a scratch but you can minimize it. If your not confident with buffing with a high speed buffer...bite the bullet and let a pro do it.

He'll build up the scratch and buff it down.

Up Up and away.........

I probably didnt explain it well enough. the original scratch on his truck was sprayed over with a spray paint. It covered it nicely but the paint doesnt look like the same shade as the base. Would a polishing compound oxidize the paint and blend it in better?

No..... Pigment is pigment and no amount of compounding or microsanding will change that....He's screwed sorry to say.... Strip it and reshoot it.

I have a weak stomach when it comes to dumb sh*t. No offense, but touching up a scratch on a newer or new vehicle with a rattle can is just plain stupid. Followed by asking if Turtle Wax will make it look better? That, my friend, is the perfect recipe for vomit. Uh oh..........

this is true but I have seen worse. A kid I went to school with took his brand new 1988 F150 trail blazing. Scratched the holy he$$ out of it. He used rattle can clear coat thinking it would blend and hide the scratches. that is worth a good vomit
