buffing

Alright. I have some serious scracthes alllll aover my truck from offroading last weekend. The area was full of clay and i kept sliding and was rubbing against trees. My truck is in desperate need of a buff job a.k.a bj.

How much does a buff job usually run? Will buffing get the scratches out of my plastic side bump guard things also?

Re: buffing

don't know an answer for ya, just wanted to see if your making the Daytona meet Saturday?
Maybe buy an orbital buffer and try it yourself? I don't think they run more than 50 bucks. A little wax might just do the trick. I tell ya what, go ahead and pick one up and you can make some extra dough at the Daytona meet, my truck is severly scratched as well

Re: buffing

Your vehicle has a clear coat over two or three coats of paint. Answer yes and no. If the scratches are in the clear coat yes they can be removed, seen several off roading incidents. However if they are passed the clear coat deep into the paint they can be disguised not removed. A good cutting compond, polish or polish wax will yeild good results. You want to start with the least abrasive method 1st polish wax - polish - cutting compond. What you are doing is removing that top layer where the scratch is. Good shop should take care of it in record time. Always remember afetr you are through that area need to be sealed with a good coat of wax.

Need some details in order to help you.... along with some pics before you accept any recommendations from the members.

1. What color it the truck...It matters
2.How did you get the scratches....Spiderwebbing from washing...road rash from the trails?
3.Have you tried anything on them thus far?

Also..Depending on the color (yes it matters) and size of your truck...You're looking around $150 - $200 for a professional job on the exterior.

We need details.....

Re: buffing

i rubbed up against a tree. my truck is black. i don't think it is deep scratches because when i run my finger nail across the scratch i do not feel that much of the scratch. it feels like my nail is running over a piece of hair or something.

my plastic side guards are severely scratched though. i have no idea how to get those scratches off.

i have not tried anything on my truck yet.

Re: buffing

Thanks for the update...

In my opinion...

Unless you are very experienced in buffing and removing paint in less than millimeters, I would take it to a local pro.

It may be on the pricey side but there are benifits to this. If you attempt it yourself you will likely end up with swirl mess on your hands. I don't think you want that on a black vehicle.

You're not going to be able to effectively remove the scratches with a random orbital onn a black vehicle.....It needs to be uniformly resurfaced.

Also, if you mess it up, the local guy will probably make you pay more cause he now has to fix your mess.

The plastic guards might be screwed....Unless you fill them with bondo, sand them and paint them.

Let us know what you decide to do...Good luck!

Re: buffing

A fellow member on here Yellomantis had some good scratches all over his truck from off-roading.

He got the Adam's machine polish stuff and took alot of them out and you could hardly tell he ever off roaded.

Hit him up for some before and afters pic and what he did. I was really impressed with the results..

So was he!!
