Clean "stain" on a rim

Okay, I was cleaning my wife's Jeep liberty the other day and I got to the rims, and in the corners of the spokes of the rim there is a streak of rust. Pretty sure it came off of the brakes (the rim is not rusted, they are aluminum). The Jeep has sat there for a bit.

Anyway, what can I use to get it off. I was thinking of a rim cleaner and a small wire brush. Is this something I should do? Steelwool? A good cleaner anyone can recommend?

Thanks!

Re: Clean "stain" on a rim

Adam's has a product called APC which stands for All Purporse Cleaner

Link here - APC

In the past I've used a SOS pad and didnt do any damage to the rim. I have not had to use that any more on any of my current wheels. It does do the job thou

Re: Clean "stain" on a rim

Please be careful here..

Always try your "least" aggressive method first.

Try a non acid mag wheel cleaner with a toothbrush....If that doesn't work... Move to a "diluted" acid and use same procedure.

No results? Move to "000"(triple aught) steel wool.

Conventional scrubbing pads are too harsh and will scratch the plastic coating and metal to a non repairable state.

Once you damage the plastic or scratch the metal, you open them up for corrrosion (pitting) to start.

Good luck and let us know how you made out.

Re: Clean "stain" on a rim

if you got room try using a clay bar.it is very safe and works great.you may need to buy a aggresive bar or if you cant find one aggresive enough just go over it several times with i lighter bar like the maguiers.i would try this first as some apc's can pit the rotors.

Claybar is not going to cut it on the mags... You're going to "F" up your bar.....Buying several bars for this job is also going to cost you $30.00+/-.....You have to think of the bigger picture. Either chemically release the stain from the metal through a reaction (non acid cleaner) or lightly rub it off with a "finer"metal.... Like "0000" (4 aught) steel wool.

Butyls, caustics and acids will attack the metal and although they will clean the stains...they will etch the metal and create the opportunity for corrosion the inhibit the metal in the near future... Just my opinion

Or you can try to some home remedies...Good luck with that.....
