Question Help removing mystery splash up

I have some form of splash up on my back wheel, nerf bar and bumper that I cannot get off. I have tried bug & tar remover, goo-gone, industrial cleaner, even paint thinner on the chrome nerf bars and have had no luck. Can anyone suggest anything to try? It almost looks as if it is varnish or something?

Any way you can post some close up pics and information about what you may have drove through???????

When you noticed it...how long it's been there?

I will try and take a couple pics tomorrow in the light, It has a little bit of a raised texture, I thought some form of grease at first but it is solid and will not budge, I was able to scape a little of the chrome with a razor blade but it still has residue and I do not want to do that on the wheels.

I have no idea what may have been drove through, generaly it is kept in the garage because I have a company vehicle however I recently had surgery so My father and wife both drove it a couple times and I recently just put new tires on and know it was not there before that, it had to only been there a couple days before my father noticed it when he was washing it.

Ok, I finally got my hands on the camera. Attached is a picture of whatever it is that got splashed up on the wheel as well as my nerf bar and a little on the back bumber. Any help on what I can use to remove this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Help removing mystery splash up

Almost looks like some kind of grease. I have already cleaned road line paint off cars. Nothing gets that stuff off but lacquer thinner. Did you drive through some freshly painted traffic lines?

I do not believe so, and it is more a brown then yellow, I thought greese at first as well but this stuff is dried hard and nothing I have tried will budge it.

Re: Help removing mystery splash up

Great job on the pics.... My gut is telling me that it's some industrial seam sealer from either a road or bridge repair.

Please tell me what you've tried so far that didn't work.

I'm also going to suggest that you try a little gas and see if it gives a little.

Please do not scrub hard or you'll be turning it into a nightmare.

Apply some gas with a rag and let it sit for 30 seconds and try wiping. make sure it stays wet.

Let us know what happens.

I have tried, bug and Tar remover, Goo-Gone, Paint thinner on the chrome, & a 3M industrial cleaner.

I will give the gas a shot tomorrow, I thought about that but was afraid it may take the finish off the wheel?

Re: Help removing mystery splash up

THe gas won't harm the plastic finish...Just make sure you wash it off.

I am getting nervous that that other products you've tried haven't touched it.

The 3M cleaner was probably Butyl based, The Goo Gone and the Bug/Tar remover was petroleum based.

If we get no movement on the gas....I'm going to suggest a Citrus based cleaner.

Can you post a pic from the splash up on the body? I want to see if it's clumpy or thin like on the wheel.

Well I got nothing with the gas, not a budge. I can try and post a picture of the body but you cannot see it on the back quarter panel because I have the smoked color so it is pretty dark and I cannot notice it unless I look right at it.

Re: Help removing mystery splash up

Damnn....

I'm going to suggest you find a pro-detailer in your area...Explain to him everything you've tried and the results you've gotten from those efforts.

From the pics I can't tell if it's a petroleum based, latex based or vinyl polymer based stain...

Sorry man... Let us know what it was and what was used to get it off if you can...

Re: Help removing mystery splash up

It may be too harsh, but oven cleaner may do it. If it is grease, it will, don't know what else it would remove though. You may want to try it on an old Ford or something first to make sure it wont harm the paint.

Re: Help removing mystery splash up

Not sure if you have taken care of the goo. Have you tried an adhesive remover? Should be able to find at local auto parts store. Good luck.
