Its getting very very interesting now. Who knows, we may end up with The Big Three: Toyota, Honda and Nissan. The ones that actually know how to run a business...
If that happens we would have a bigger problem than deciding on which car to drive. More like 2.5 million unemployed workers feeding from the unemployment pool of money which is already depleated.
Funny thing is Japan's economy is worst than ours right now and if this happens America bails out Japan's economy and potentillay sends ours into a Depression and huge DOW crash.
I Spoke To The Nissan Distict Manager One Day At The Dealer And He Says "cummins Engine And A Nissan Transmission, With A Nissan Body. The Engine Is The Only Thing That Is Dodge Related, And Dodge Doesn't Even Build The Darn Thing." I'm Gonna Wait And See What They Look Like, Because I Would Not Mind Having A 3/4 Ton Diesel Titan. Plus The Last Dodge Diesel We Had The Engine Never Had A Problem. I Kept Going Through Transmissions.
that would be sweeeeet!
a cummins engine mated to nissan's highly efficient drivetrain. i think that would be a tundra stopper.
maybe one and then the other two pick up the extra business.
Problem is, there is no extra business to pick up.

the Big Three need to make cars that people want and are reliable. The UAW might be hastening their demise but they are not the cause of it. The UAW is an easy scapegoat.
last I saw the F150 out sold any other truck 2 to 1... but profit was down ... WHY???? Because they are paying an 18yo to put on lug nuts starting at $26per hour with min 2 week vacation per year. Bust the union and maybe you could get some profit back in, Maybe....
But alas the Dem's get most of the $$$ they run elections on from unions, so will that happen... NOT NOW....

i think with benefits + pay United AutoWorker (UAW) union employees get paid around $77/hour??
Japanese automobile employees average around $44/hr.
U.S. can't compete with those numbers. the big three are only killing themselves.
So sad. I really want to believe that business is still alive in America.

off topic: just today i went to home depot and i noticed the sliding miter saws were discounted almost $300. that includes Dewalt (now $399) and Ridgid (now $349). hmmmm... maybe the makita's stayed the same price because they are Japanese?
Who knows? maybe if the economy still sucks we may have an opportunity to buy a new truck at greatly reduced prices. but honestly, i'd rather have a good economy right now. We've already got a good truck in the Titan we already have.
I just need some peace of mind.

If the Nissan/Dodge connection happens, I hope consideration has been or is given to adding MDS or the production an add-on MDS module (plug and Play) for 04+ Titans.
What MDS means:
The Chrysler Group Multi-Displacement System (MDS) is a fuel-saving cylinder deactivation technology that is here today — customers get the power and capability of the HEMI® V-8 that they desire with an improvement in fuel economy of up to 20 percent. MDS allows fuel saving by shutting down part of the engine through cylinder deactivation.
Multi-Displacement System (MDS) is an automobile engine variable displacement technology. It debuted in 2004 on the 5.7 L modern Hemi V8. Like Mercedes-Benz's Active Cylinder Control, General Motors' Active Fuel Management, and Honda's Variable Cylinder Management, it deactivates four of the V8's cylinders when the throttle is closed.
The system was first offered only on passenger cars, since the heavy demands of trucks would interfere with its operation. However, it was recalibrated for 2006 and will be offered on all seven models, including SUV's and 1500 series trucks, using the 5.7 L engine.
Chrysler expects that the technology will boost economy by 10% to 20%. In the Jeep Grand Cherokee with MDS, highway fuel mileage for the V8 is the same as the V6 at 21 mpg (11.2 liters per 100 km).
In order to preserve the characteristic rumble of the V8 engines, Chrysler and Eberspaecher North America designed a special exhaust system for MDS-equipped vehicles. This includes four separate mufflers, two large central ones for V8 mode and two smaller ones near the tailpipes for straight-4 operation. Unlike the system used on Mercedes-Benz V12 engines, also designed by Eberspaecher, the system is mechanically passive.

The Ram and Titan will also share the upcoming, Cummins-built V8 light duty diesel engine, expected for the Ram in 2010.
Cummins switching to v8 seems like a bad idea to begin with. I mean, why change such a good thing. Almost every transport truck in the world is a straight 6 cylinder, as are all the cummins motors in dodge trucks...they can't all be wrong. Everyone knows that the cummins is the best diesel motor out there for light duty trucks. Look what happened with the international v8 motors in the fords. The chev/isuzu duramax is not so hot either. But I would love to see a straight six cummins in a nissan! IMO a dodge with a cummins is like a golden nugget wrapped in a piece of S*** truck. If they took that golden motor and put it in a nice truck I would be sold. The only reason I didnt buy a cummins is because I dont like dodge.
Latest talk at my local Nissan Dealer is no one Knows if the Titan will be built after 2010 now. The Dodge?Titan merger is dead as far as everyone I have talked too so dont expect anything there either.
My hope is Nisan keeps the Titan around and tweaks it. With a handful of tweaks the thing could be on of the best 1/2 tons on the road for a long time. I hope they keep building it because if i can get 5 more good years out of mine i'll by another for sure.
