2012 Hunts

Just got back from season two Elk/Deer season up in Colorado and though I would post some pics (mainly for you suckers that are stuck in an office...haha, jk). Unfortunately, I was not successful in my hunt for a cow. Our group of 7 did end up with 2 large cows for the week, so at least I brought home some meat. The bulls and bucks were nowhere to be found.

We hunted GMU 521 and will most likely be going somewhere else due to poor success rate the past 5 years (left first unit due to gas well and logging activity).
I only saw a rough looking spike bull and a bear all week (plus a couple of grouse). So the bear was my highlight. He was hanging out on a rock about 125 yds up the hill. He was nodding off and really didn't care that I was around. I use my iPhone as a GPS (works great and way more user friendly than a stand alone unit for those interested-$10 Gaia app) so I was able to snap a few pics of him.

Weather was unusually warm the first 4 days of the hunt followed by high winds and some snow. The warm weather caused ranchers to leave their cattle up on the mountain...which I want to blame for lack of animals, but probably had little to no effect. Those electric fences did give some enjoyment while watching some of the others get shocked when using the "insulated" gate handles.

Thought I would start a thread since big game season is underway in most states and see everyones setup and pics of those 7X7 bulls.

Some scenery:

Got to test the duratracs a little bit:

32X16 tent. Propane setup with 8 or so lanterns and an oven.

99.9mpg on I-70 headed east:

Cool Pics. I'm certainly jealous. Kill or not it is still an awesome time.

Re: 2012 Hunts

I agree some of the best times in my life have been hunting/fishing trips with friends and family. It's nice to get your quarry but the adventure is what makes the trip for me. Spent 4 days last week hunting with my son, managed a few grouse, 5 pheasant, and a partridge. Saw lots of deer but not anything close enough for a bow shot - but spent a lot of quality time with my kid.

Re: 2012 Hunts

Very true. The hunting was great, but the shooting was bad. Like you said though, that's only 5% of the trip. We had a blast. This is 12 years in a row for me and over 40 for a couple of the guys.

OneQuick06- That's the truth. He was definitely watching that ridge from that rock. There were steep washouts that would force animals to skirt the ridge to go up and down the mountain...I guess he had the same idea as us.

Let's see some more pics!

Re: 2012 Hunts

Heading out soon for 3rd season elk hunting, can't wait!!! I'll post some pics upon my return.

Went on my first antelope hunt the first weekend of October. Saw some really nice bucks, but couldn't get them in range. Finally had one that cooperated and stopped at ~150-160 yards. Complete pass through shot and dropped him where he stood. Not a big buck, but it was fun to connect and I had a great time with my dad! It was nice being able to quarter him up on the tailgate of the T, can't do that with an elk!!!

Re: 2012 Hunts

Good looking antelope. I am hoping to get a tag for some antelope hanging out on some of my father-in-laws land. You can quarter an antelope on the tailgate and only fit a quarter of an elk on the tailgate, haha.

Where are you headed for 3rd season? make sure and take some pics. Looks like mild weather around the central area...at least early next week.

We'll be down near Gunnison, CO in unit 55. An area we have hunted for many years. Think we chatted with one another a little bit about hunting last year. Saw you were in 521, we hunted for 2 years in 521 in '07 and '08 up near Electric Mountain. Weren't too impressed with it so we went back to our old stomping grounds... I too saw a bear up there, the only one I have seen while hunting. Weather doesn't look to be cooperating, but oh well, we will make the best of it. I'll snap some photos and post them up once we get back...

Re: 2012 Hunts

O yeah that's right. I actually went back to check out the areas you were talking about. We are headed back to unit 42 which is just north west of 521. I'm so tired of that stupid electric mountain hike and the near "highway" through the middle of the area. The bear was right at the top of electric and another group member saw another on 705 near the reservior. I might catch up with you in a couple weeks to hear about unit 55.

There were a huge number of hunters this year. You drive by the powerline and there would be a hunter every 200 yards...I would be scared if anything crossed.

Re: 2012 Hunts

I am dieing to get out West and hunt, one of these days. Born and raised in FLA and hunted public land for many years. Was finally able to get in to really good Georgia lease in Middle West GA, big Buck country for GA/Alabama. After a lot of good years there and loosing the property I have a hard time getting excited to hunt FLA again. Good thing I am headed up to Middle GA Thursday for 10 days! Probably be all the deer hunting do this year.

Re: 2012 Hunts

Went out for the South Dakota pheasant opener...shot our 90 rooster and a handful of sharpies,3 yotes and a bunch of prairie dogs. The coyotes are thick out there this year....they came on to my aunts neighbors porch and took their dog....that farmer never allowed hunting but are begging me to hunt the coyotes...lol....Going back for Thanksgiving for birds and my buddy and I have 2 doe tags each. MN rifle opener is this weekend-suppose to be a good one!!
