There is no substitute for a nice "duck bill" shotgun.

http://www.mst2-vietnam.info/Stoner_...37_Shotgun.htm

I read an article a few years ago where they were asking a national pistol shooting champion what he used for home defense. A shotgun of course.

If you don't want a shotgun, you might consider a .38 Special revolver in double action. It will not jamb on you...you don't need to pull a slide back, it packs a pretty good wallop, and they can be found fairly cheaply because everyone wants an auto. Just pick it up and pull the trigger. Plus, the ammo is cheaper.
I think that everyone wants an auto because they have seen a lot of them in the movies. Having said this, I have a Baby Eagle 40 S&W auto, but I am thinking of selling it, and buying a .38

PS I just noticed that Kronos recommended the .38 as well...

Ok for home defense, I have to recomend a shotgun. Handguns go through to many walls for me. Also the rack of a pump gun will get anyones attention and generaly cause an imediate retreat.

If you want a pistol and you can afford it I am a SIG man. I have a P226 in 9mm and several friends have P228, P229 and P220s wonderful guns and are right up there with the HKs.

If I had to do it all over again. I would get a .40 The reason is most of those can be modified to shoot .357 sig and 9mm with a drop in barrel and mag change.

Now I have a friend out in Pheonix who sells most guns but specializes in Glocks. (Prices are 5 - 10% over cost) http://www.glock-doc.com/ He has good prices and all you have to do is get a local FFL dealer to accept the shipment and do the paperwork $10-$25 per gun. He also works many gun shows in CA. He has the full scoop on what you can cary and what is required. As mentioned above www.packing.org has the scoop on the permits.
Hope this helps

Boy, did you ever hit on a subject that breeds some extreme opinions

Personally, I believe that there a definite pros and cons to both sides of the shotgun vs. pistol argument for home defense. I prefer a pistol because it can usually be made more accessable.

I am also a HUGE fan of Glock. There are many nay-sayers out there, but, for personal protection, the Glock is hard to beat.

First, they are life-or-death reliable. Period. No matter what. If you have a live round chambered and you pull the trigger it WILL go bang.

Second, although folks will tell you that "they don't have a safety" this is complete BS. A Glock WILL NOT go bang unless you want it to. It just doesn't have an EXTERNAL safety that can and will get in the way when you least want it to.

Finally, the trigger pull on a Glock is the same EVERY TIME. Is it the smoothest trigger in the world? No. There are many guns with better "feeling" triggers, both that have been extensively modified (NOT recommended for a protection weapon) or out of the box. However, for defense, CONSISTENCY is KEY.

I shoot pistols competitively thru an organization called IDPA (or at least I did before my daughter was born and started sucking up all my free time). IDPA stresses situational awareness and self defense tactics, and, while not a substitute for good defensive training, it is a great way to keep ones skill honed. The Glock is probably THE most popular weapon in the Stock Service Pistol (basically out of the box) class in IDPA. There's a reason for that.

Oh, and good luck getting a carry permit in Commie-fornia. You might want to consider moving across the border to AZ or another shall-issue state.

Why the H&K over the Sig229 or Glock 23 27?

MXTitan, just curious, but why pick the H&K over the Glock 23 27 or the Sig 229 family in 40 or 9mm?
The Sig 229 has the long fairly heavy trigger pull on the 1st shot,so it will never go off without the trigger being pulled long and hard(I doubt a kid under 6 could pull it),and a 6 yo certainly couldn't chamber a round. It doesn't have a formal safety since it just can't be fired without a long, hard pull-a safety on something like this is just one more thing to forget about during the stress of the monent.Just grab it and squeeze-12 lbs hard, and fairly long.It also is a bit-maybe $100 -cheaper than the H&K,and parts and such are more available. It is also Stainless steel and aluminum. The slide is black, but it is blackened SS.
The Glocks-23 and 27 are good choices-maybe $150 less than the H&K-have a much longer record of reliability, and there are all sorts of aftermarket items if you are into that(maybe not a good idea on a defence gun). They also don't have a formal "safety switch" but because of the built in trigger press safety, they can't go off from getting caught on clothing, dropped etc.Only way to make them shoot is to squeeze the trigger. Now,the trigger pull is less than on a SIG(maybe 5.5 lbs vs 12 lbs),so I guess a kid is a little more likely to be able to shoot it,but best to keep it out of the reach of kids(sometimes things go wrong of course, which is why I favor the SIG or S&W over the Glock in a house with little kids).
Just curious why the H&K- a "hand feel" thing? Thanks,Charlie PS for bang for size-bulk-price the Glock 27 is impossible to beat-small,light,40 cal(easily 400 ftlbs with proper ammo),10 rds, cheap, not too stiff a recoil. The glocks also seem to get a few more FPS for the same barrel length-academic really, but neat.

That Sig 229 actually looks really good - it is just a matter of finding one and seeing how it feels in-hand. I have just always heard good things about the H&K, but it seems that not a lot of you guys mentioned them - oh well. If I had to choose between the Sig and a Glock, I really think the Sig is a much better looking gun. As far as getting a shotgun - I already have on under the bed, but I also am going to be using the handgun for protection out in the field as well. Also, I am pretty sure the wife would not be able to use the shotgun if she needed to. She doesn't really like the idea of me getting a handgun, but she understands why I want one so bad. Anyway, what should I expect to spend on the Sig 229?

I personally like double action revolvers and in particular the 357 mag. With a 357 mag you can shoot cheaper and lighter recoiling 38 special ammo for practice. Probably the 125 gr. bullet is a better deffensive round but I keep mine loaded with 158 gr. Hornady xtp's as I use the same pistol as a carry gun and also as a side arm while hunting[158 gr. is a better deer round]. I also prefer stainless steel pistols for obvious reasons.
Whichever you purchase I would highly recomend a lot of range time getting familiar with your gun of choice, and I would also recomend that anyone who owns a firearm or hunts to become a member of the National Rifle Association[NRA] I don't always agree with everything they do but I do stand behind them 100%. Because without it I am sure that gun ownershipo as we know it today would not exist.

$600 or so for new 229-add $100 for night sights

Here in Louisiana you could get a new 229-make sure you get it with 12 rd mags-for $600-not much more.If you like night sights(cool, but not absolutely necessary) add $100.I wouldn't bother paying extra for that special finish that Sig pushes. The regular black finish is just fine, and guns don't fail because the finish gets worn(heck,it is SS and aluminum). The Sig should be ~$100 less than the H&K.I have smallish hands, and I have no problem with it.
The Glocks are fine also(kinda ugly but they grow on you,but they work fine-I have a 27),but with kids around I like the heavier trigger pull of the 229 Sig.Luck,Charlie

Well, after much thought and deliberation - not to mention a lot of help on the thread - I am going to be purchasing a Sig 229. Now, I just have to find a good shop, and hopefully find a well taken care of used gun - if not, I will just buy new. Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it!
