Mx Titan; I have had a concealed weapons permit in Calif. for over 20 years. If you live in city you have to get the permit form the city police dept. If you live outside the city limits you get the permit form the county sherrif. If you live in an urban county you an pretty much kiss off getting a permit. In the county I live in pretty much anybody can get a permit (as long as you are not a felon etc.). If you do apply for a permit, one wuestion they as is why you want to carry a firearm. There is really only one good answer, to comply with the law. If you say that you need it for any specfic reason (such as need it because you carry cash to bank etc.) then they will put restrictions on the permit so you can only carry a firearm while performing those specfic functions. Also be careful when traveling to big cities. San Francisco is a good example. I have been hauled off to the police station numerous times for carrying in that city.Even when you show the cops your permit they haul you off. Their explaination is that no private citizens in S.F. have permits. L.A. is even worse. Also, if you buy a new weapon don't even think about putting a magazine with over a 10 round capacity in it. You will go to jail. If you have an older pre ban weapon you will be alright. Each county/city has their own rules about how long the permit is good for, and what classes you have to take and how you must shoot to qualify. If you have multiple firearms on your permit you must qualify with the largest caliber firearm, not the most powerful firearm. The state thinks a .45 colt is more powerful than a .44 mag. You also need to aware of where you carry a firearm. You can go into a bank no problem. Don't go to a bar, court house, police station, county fair or other public event. Never carry a gun anywhere near an elected offical. There are many more restrictions but you get the point. In Calif. it is almost impossible to abide by all the restrictions. Good luck.

As far as pistol my personal fav is the Sig P229 .357 sig. You can also buy the .40 SandW barrel and shoot either round. As far as protecting a household with multiple occupants I would have to go with a 12ga semi auto of some sort. For plain old protection just get a reliable gun. The advantage to a 12ga with NO2 shot or smaller is that at semi close range it will take your target down but should not travel through walls and still be lethal. The thought of firing a handgun in a house with my kids in another room would shiver me to my core. I mainly keep my sig with me now but I have no kids.
You always have to consider what the bullet is going to do after going through your target when others are in the house.
I finally found a good gun dealer in my area, ironically enough the shop is 1/4 mile from my doorstep. After talking to the guy for a while today, and looking at all HK and Sig model, I think I have found my perfect gun. None of the HK's felt good in my hand - the Sig's felt a lot better, especially the Sig Pro. http://www.sigarms.com/products/sigpro.asp It is a great little gun, and quite a bit less $$$ than the P229 ($599). Have any of you guys actually fired a Sig Pro?

The 2009 is a very good pistol. It is essentially the same type action as all the Sigs with the polymer-steel ribbed frame-like a Glock.Save a good $100 on it over a 229.Can't go wrong with it.
I found the same thing with the H&K pistols-felt funny in my hand. Now that old oddball H&K that was gas operated, and had a squeeze grip-****er,it felt pretty good.Way too complicated (and expensive)for a 9mm pistol, but a good shooter.Luck,Charlie

After all the research I did, I am a dispatcher for police. I went with the Springfield Armory new XD version in a 40cal. I think it is a great gun and it cost me $420 at Sportsmans Warehouse.
