I figured it was a Mossie, and you had just made a slip of the lip. Even still, the Mossie ain't stainless (steel), it's carbon steel electroless nickeled. Much more corrosion resistant than is stainless and a nicer color as well. I like it.

A major majority of the time the animals are much more affraid of you than you of them. And a majority of the attacks as stated in earlier posts are by sick, starving, or by sow bears who feel you are a threat to their cubs. Are you naive...maybe, that said, if hiking with the stick makes you more comfortable than hiking without it- then go with it. I do not hike with any of the following: stick, gun (unless hunting ofcourse), bells of any kind, bear "spray" of any kind, dumb tourists, little dogs, or people who have or are carrying any of the following.
adavis99:"If I were to get a gun, can you reccomend a handgun that is not too expensive, will work with one shot, and the ammo is inexpensive enough that I wouldn't go broke getting comfortable with it at the range?"
As I said before I do not hike with a handgun, and unless you are very proffecient with it and know when and when not to use it- then I do not recomend that you do either. Also unless you go with a big power handgun, which are harder to aim, your chances of "fending off" a bear, especially a brown, are minimul. The most you would do is make it angerier- which is exactly the opposite of what you want to do. sorry to sound anti-gun...I'm not i'm just against people having guns who shouldn't and are carrying them when they shouldn't. They risk everyone around them when they do. The actual chances of you having the chance to use a handgun when hiking when you actually need to are extremely slim. IF you are attacked AND IF you have a handgun, you will PROBABLY not be able to get to it in time.
Bear Hunter is right when he said bears are a lot tougher than you think. they are. They have a mountainous advantage over us in all areas except two. Those being our mind, which argueable is better, and running downhill, where we don't have an advantage-but their advantage is not quite as much in the other areas. Those areas being: running, climbing trees (all black bears and some brown bears), and swimming being the major ones.
Alright I think i've written enough in this post and about this thread, the original reason for the thread was to recognize a family's loss of a very young girl, which is regretable.
sorry to say Heli, but that's not always true, and most of the time it's not the bears fault anyway-but dumb people leaving their garbage available to bears, which gets bears 'climated to humans, which is extremely dangerous for both bears and humans.

Nice post...your thinking is exactly why I never carried a gun, especially the slim chance that you see the attack coming and have time to get your gun. A stick is mostly for peace of mind. If I run accross an injured or crazed animal, smaller than a bear...odds are I can knock it out. Also, I have bad knees and the stick helps when going down hill.

I actually live about 6 miles from where this attack happened and I will be honest...I have never seen a bear in the wild to this day and I have lived here 19 years. It was very sad that it happened. My next door neighbor works for the forestry service and was on duty when this happened. It was documented that the family was warned not to go up there due to a bear being around.
Well you boys can break out your woopin stick, I'll just use mine to traverse terrain. For the animals that want a title shot with me the S&W 357 will be strapped to my leg.
