Any Turkey Hunters?

This is my first year Turkey hunting. I saw several Turkeys this past Deer season around the house so I thought I would give it a try. After a few days of either seeing just hens or getting "busted" by ole Tom, I finally got lucky.

I got this one yesterday evening around 5:30. His vital statistics are, weight 25 lbs. beard length 10 1/2 inches, spur length is 1 1/4 inches.

I dressed him out and got him in the freezer, we plan on waiting till Thanksgiving to see how he eats.

Anyone else doing any good???

Re: Any Turkey Hunters?

I haven't gone turkey hunting as of yet, bought a turkey gun though a couple years ago. As I was about to leave for work, my neighbor next door, who's an over the road truck driver (so I only see him every week or three) said he got his first turkey here in NE with a bow. He said it was about 5-7 feet from him. He's gonna get it mounted.

Here in the midwest I think the season is gonna be pretty good. Once I get done with my MPA I wanna get back into hunting.

I haven't been able to go yet this year. Hopefully I'll get to go at least once before it ends.

I wondered when somone would notice that. I guess you won the prize!!!!
Actually I bought these tires and wheels from another TT member and will run them in the summer then switch back to my 17"s with the Rugged trails in the fall.

What do you like better about the 18s on the highway rather than the 17s.

Re: Any Turkey Hunters?

I've been going for about 3 years now and I've killed two. I've been twice this year and came out empty handed both times. First time this year I couldnt get him to come in and the second time he was in the thicket behind me so I tried to crawl after him. It took me about a 45 minutes to get to where he was within 60 yards. I came up to a little creek and there was a snake (cottonmouth) so I decided it wasnt worth crawling around. I dont like snakes so I just got up and walked off.

Nothing in particular, I just got a good deal on them.
They ride about the same.

Re: Any Turkey Hunters?

I haven't been this year, but my buddy went monday 10th. He was set up and called a hen in to him. She milled around feeding in the grass acting spooky.
All of a sudden to his left, a gobbler came out of the woods. He came through the thick grass toward my bud. He raised the gun and shot. To his surprise, the bird fell and another bird took wing from behind the hit bird.
The shot had peppered the 2nd bird and he came down. My bud finished him off, and tagged 2 birds. Went home in amazement.....2 birds with 1 stone...

Wow!! I'll never be that lucky. Tell your bud congrats.
I went again yesterday evening. I spooked a hen off trying to get to my blind. After about an hour four hens came into the clover patch to feed. I gave a few calls but evidently ole Tom must have already had a hot girl friend. I'm getting ready to head out the back door in a few min. The wifie will be the shooter this time if we see anything.

Re: Any Turkey Hunters?

BTW for those interested, here is a pic from one of my trail cams earlier this spring of four Toms. I killed my Tom from the shooting house seen in the pic.
Up the "holler" from the shooting house you can find remnants of an old moonshine still from years past.
