How do I convince the gf to be more comfortable around handguns?

Here's the situation, I always used to carry a Glock 19 on me but recently sold it. I have a Ruger Super RedHawk 480 that I keep in the truck at all times. My girlfriend is super against me carying another pistol on me. I have my eye on a S&W AirLite 357 to carry in replacement of my Glock. She said that it will be a big problem with us if I decide to get this. She dosen't like the Ruger in my truck but says that it's easier to deal with that than one on my person. I tried to explain to her that it's only for our protection and that I think that every honest citizen should carry but she really dosen't like it at all. Any ideas to convince her that it's really not that bad? Anybody else have a spouse or otherwise that thinks like her? What do I do, any suggestions?

She didn't know that I carried the Glock at all and she just recently found the Ruger and wigged out about it (she's short so she dosent climb into the truck too often

) I'm probably just going to buy it and carry it and not tell her about it at all and see what happens. Feel free to chime in Titan Talkers.

Take her down to the range and enroll her in a shooting class with other women. By the time she hears a few rape & robbery stories from other women, she will probably change her tune.

Exactly! Besides she will probably enjoy shooting! Now that I've got kids I don't keep anything loaded or unlocked. But When they get older. They will be taught proper safetyand how to shoot.

That is what I told her best, I tried to get her to shoot with me yesterday and she wouldnt do it. We had a long talk about it and she said that she dosen't really mind that I own guns but she feels really uncomfortable around them. We have been dating for about 2 years and have been friends for 3 years before that so she definately knows me well enough that she should be alright with it. She thinks that if anything bad is going to happen it just will and there is no way of warding that off. I've tried to explain to her that I would rather go down with a fighting chance instead of just standing there helpless but she just won't break. Thanks for the replies so far. This is really tough, I am so Pro Gun and she really isn't anti gun but she dosen't like them either.

You need to find one of her girlfriends that carries or shoots and have her explain it or take her shooting.

your into guns. thats part of who you are. To ask you to give them up is kind of like asking her to totally change her hair color or the style of clothes she wears. If she suceeds in getting her way on the guns she might try to make you get ride of your Titan. If you were already a gun guy when she met you she shouldn't get so upset. It might be different if you just recently got into them. Don't hide anything from her. not sure if you care but its a womans point of view here. The fastest way to lose somebody is to try to change them.

May I suggest you be open and honest. Take her to a shooting range and stress the safety aspects of concealed carry. Take her to a local woman's shelter and let her talk to the ladys - and see and hear first hand what some folks are capable of when they are out of control. My wife was of like mind when we started dating to your girl friend. However; I did the exact things that I am suggesting and made sure that she agreed with it. One of the surest ways to get your concealed carry permit pulled or denied is to have a significant other who lives with you in this great state of NY complain to anyone that she is "uncomfortable" with you having a handgun ****ed and locked about your person. I am not sure about other states these days - but it would be a concern of mine before I went any further in your shoes.

If you want to carry the gun when you are with your gf get an ankle holster. She won't know it's there. Fobus makes an ankle holster that will fit the S&W you want. How about not carrying the gun when you are with your gf. How about carrying when she is not around. It's always good to explain gun safety. Taking her out shooting would be a good option but if she just isn't willing to be around guns you need to give up the gun or give up the girl. Just kidding, I'm sure youll find a solution to keep both. Good luck. You should of kept the glock. Ever want to talk hand guns hollar at me.

Anyway I read a story on another online forum. The story was about a situation in NY when a couple went out for Valentines day, were parked overlooking some cliff or something. A car pulled up behind them and three guys got out and one of the guys tapped on the glass with his weapons. They pulled the guy out beat the hell out of him then stripped and raped his GF right infront of him.

Horrible story, but thats reality.

On a side note...my new girlfriend shoots mine all the time...I'll never forget the day she shot a 300WSM rifle, she about fell down....(somehow she actually hit the bullseye.)

Well first I would be upfront with her in every aspect. She should repect you enough and know you well enough to not push you away from things you like. I would also explain to her this is important to you and she should keep an open mind about it and give the range a try if anything just her watching you and others shooting . Then if that goes well work her up to her shooting. If she refuses I would consider your options as in relationship wise either way I would not carry the gun concealed unless its already be discussed , sure way to a bad day with her. My ex-girlfriends were ok with them because I was upfront , but some were not and that may have been the reason I didn't marry them lol. My wife currently has a AK-47 on her side of the bed

Convince her to go with you to a shooting range, target shooting, let her know its ok to scared, gradually lean her into shooting a Glock mini.

Some good suggestions, I appriciate it. I will try to drag her to a shooting range with me soon. I'll start her off with my .17 HMR and go from there. The only thing she has ever shot or handled is a BB gun years ago. Thanks everyone....I'll keep ya' posted.

another thing...if she doesn't want to go to the gun range...see if you can make a compromise. One thing you do not like to do with her...say you'll give it a shot if she will give your guns a chance.

PS: Dont start her off with a cannon... a .38 revolver is usually what the girls like at first...once they get comfy move em up to the .45ACP
