Gotta kill... (not for weak stomachs)

Well, last weekend was opening day for us (central florida) and I missed it due to a ton of school work

So since I have been working avg 50hrs a week I told my boss that I would be taking Friday off (hes a fishing guy so he knows how it gets)

So I headed out to my public WMA with a buddy and the first morning we saw 1 buck and 4 does on our bike ride out to our spots....Then nothing from then on. We went out later that night, he saw a turkey while I had a curious racoon that wouldn't leave me alone...nothing shot.

So Saturday morning we headed back out saw nothing alllll morning, it was getting pretty hot...so I was about to give up when I decided 30 more minutes, then I'll start walking back...

Then 10 minutes after that, I saw the ears I've been waiting for all weekend about 200 yards away. I waited and waited to see if she would come in closer....they got to about 50 yards and they didn't come any closer...so I had enough and started foot pursuit. I came up to a dyke that didnt look as deep as it was...first step was ankle, which went to thigh which went to waist then to chest! I crossed and tripped on something under the water on the bank and thought for sure that they heard it.

I come up the bank, look over and she is still there, so I crept in for about 100 or so yards, they didnt get spooked or anyhting....kept walking would freeze when she looked yadda yadda. I finally get close enough to where i reached where the saw grass that covered me was as close as I could have gone without being detected. Peaked over and saw them ducked back down, drew back poped up set the bottom pin on her and released....SLAPPP...i heard the hit. She fell, got up and fell and died. Looked like a perfect shot...after gutting her...it was check out the broad head mark in her heart.

First kill with a bow, first deer in the titan...and its only the 2nd week of the season!

Nice hunt, save me a steak. I just can't get into hunting in good weather though being from the midwest. Enjoy the jerky.

Re: Gotta kill... (not for weak stomachs)

yea finding areas is hard around here...especially finding ones you dont have to pull quotas for...

If I get another deer soon (and this meat isnt gone) I'll flip you a chunk or two

Thanks man, appreciate it. On a side note since you are from the area, I heard Disney will be putting a Six Flags where Bithlo speedway is now. If you like to race out there, you may want to get in a couple of trips before they close her down.

Re: Gotta kill... (not for weak stomachs)

Congrats to ya. Nice looking deer and a darn good shot!!

I'm heading for the woods in a few min. So far the season has been slow around here. Had a deer in range yesterday evening but she had too many dependents with her, lol.

Again, congrats to ya on your first bow kill.

Congrats on the deer! I am interested in the "dyke", did she say anything when you walked through her.

Upper St. Johns. I wasnt lucky enough to pull any quotas this year, therefore i gotta stick to the others ones.

Have you checked out Lake George at all?

Re: Gotta kill... (not for weak stomachs)

yeah I have hunted LK George a few times. Only got skeeter bit and a few hogs. Lake George Dexter/Mary is the place to be for nice Bucks for the Lk George area. It's a 5pt minimum and they are all over the place. I got drawn for a hog hunt once and never seen so many shootable illegal bucks in one time.

I just got back from Rock Springs doing a little scouting. My old haunt is not being hunted So I guess I will slip in there. It doesn't look good from the road so people over look it.

Re: Gotta kill... (not for weak stomachs)

Is that what they call the Florida Key deer?? Looks
close to our Black Tail deer but our's are larger.
Don't throw away that heart!!!!!! When I use to
go after Mule deer with my pop's back in the early
70's through the early 80's, liver, hearts and onions
was dinner tradition after opening day of season.

I'm not familiar with those areas at all. If your up for it maybe we can meet up and go scout the areas up there...save some gas money.

Nope, Key deer are actually smaller! haha, yes its possible....basically jackelopes! But Key deer are endangered and illegal to shoot. When I was down in the keys this past summer on a fishing trip, I only saw one and it was probably the smallest deer I had ever seen (without spots)

here are a few pics to show you how small they are.

Re: Gotta kill... (not for weak stomachs)

Bigjimbo LK George Dexter Mary is quota only and fills up fast. There are no more quota's left. Same with Rock Springs. LK George is a open WMA except for the 9-days. It has been at least 6-7 years since I have been there.

I will be in Georgia hunting my lease every weekend starting this up coming weekend. If I take a weekend off I will shoot you an PM and maybe we can do some looking around up that way. LK George has open pork season during small game, only one of few WMA's do that. You can use bow, rimfire, handgun centerfire (I think) and shot guns.
