Success at last!!

Got over to the lease Friday afternoon and decided to try a new spot out that I had never hunted before. I found a trail that was being used heavily and set the wifes stand about 20 yards off of it and moved mine 50 yards deeper into the woods. I was hoping she would make her first bow kill and I would be able to observe. We got settled into our stands around 4:00 everything looked great, the wind was blowing into our faces and the sun was setting at our backs. We sat and sat nothing!! I thought well great here we go again nothing but a sore behind from sitting. Finally around 6:00 I caught movement in front of me, it was a couple of does feeding on acorns 50 yards out. They fed for 15 min. or so and finally one of them started angling towards the wife. I saw her stand slowly and raise her bow, unfortunatly the deer wandered off to her right and out of her bow range. I started looking for the second deer and saw it angling towards me but it didn't look like it was going to head in the wifes direction. It was angling away at what I figured 30 yards and I took the shot. We sat for 15 min or so and got down to check the damage, great blood trail!! She didn't run far and luckily was only about a half mile from the 4 wheeler.

Re: Success at last!!

I can see some tenderlions in your future!

I hope to pick up a couple of does (or bucks) when gun season begins in a couple of weeks here in NC. I'm about out of deer hamburger, and a nice fat doe is just what I need.

Re: Success at last!!

Looks good. I was in the woods all weekend and didn't get a shot on one. Coming out I see this guy on the side of the logging road. He just dragged a very nice 8 pointer out. Look really good. Hopefully I'll have better luck in the coming days.

In fact that's what i've been doing all morning. I purchased this grinder a couple of years ago and it is worth it's weight in gold, sure beats the old hand grinder. Deer burger is great in chile, soups, spaghetti sauce, and also makes some tasty meat sticks and sausage.

I have been processing our own deer for years, theres really nothing to it and this way I know exactly how it's been handled from field to table. It does make a difference!!!

And yes, we will be having tenderloin for supper tonight.

Re: Success at last!!

Congratulations on the harvest!!! I'm pretty bummed out today. I watched the big buck I have been watching for the last month get hit by a car this morning as I was pulling out of my driveway.

Fortunately, he wasn't killed but I think he sustained some serious injury. He got up and ran after he got hit, but I don't know how far. This is the third deer I have seen hit while in my driveway.

I will definitely be taking a walk when I get home tonight!

Re: Success at last!!

I can't say that didn't cross my mind, but I "HAD" to be at a meeting, or I would have.

I forgot to say earlier, the woman that hit it was yacking on her cell phone drinking a coffee at the time. I don't wish ill will on anyone, but I hope she burnt her lip , lost the call and peed a little.

It was tough to watch the whole thing happen cause she had enough time to actually stop! Oh well.

Sorry to hijack and congrats again!

It's a little known fact but I would wager that more deer die on the highway than from the hand of hunters. Makes it even worse when in your case it sounds that it could of been avoided.

Hope your luck changes for the better!!!!!

Dinner will be served promptly at 6:00 you are more than welcome to attend, black tie is optional.

Re: Success at last!!

Congrats, I had a nice doe come out on me at 40 yards. I think I used my 20 yard pin in my excitement and shot under her. But atleast I missed completely and didn't wound her. Enjoy your tenderloins.
